Ide Gakusui was born at funatsu-mura, Minami-Tsuru-gun, Yamanashi prefecture. After graduating from the Department of Arts of Nippon University, he studied paintings of the Japanese school under Yamanouchi Tamon, and after Tamon's death worked under Arai Kampo. In 1929 Gakusui went to China where he again studied and traveled particularly in northern and central China. Later he settled in Shanghai and established an institute of Japanese Painting there. At the end of WWII he returned to Tokyo, and beginning in 1949 he began turning out woodblock prints of his favorite subject -- birds and flowers -- for the publisher Watanabe.

This print is made from the original woodblocks carved in 1950.
