HIRANO HAKUHO, was born in Kyoto and studied nihonga, ukiyo-e as well as the classical and modern styles of painting. Watanabe Shozaburo published is prints, including After a Bath which was included in the Toledo Museum Print Show in 1936. Apparently the entire print run was sold out at that show. Only five Hirano bijin prints are known: two entitled Before the Mirror showing the artist's model from two perspectives before a mirror dressed in glorious red patterned kimonos; the aforementioned After a Bath which is a nude; Young Girl, showing a youthful maiko sitting on an azuri pillow dressing in a sumptuous violet kimono on a yellow background; and this unusually sized naga-ban print showing a beauty on a veranda fixing her hair pin. She is dressed in an elegant brown kimono with a blue and white patterned obi. But look at the details in this amazing print. The hazy trees in the distance; the fan she holds in her right hand, the delicate texture on the obi and fan; the fine carving of the hair; and the subtle red detailing of her kimono lining.
