Artist: Kasamatsu Shiro
Mountain Stream of Atara (Mountain Lodge)
Date: 1957, this (ato-zuri) undated edition published by Unsodo from the original wood blocks
Size: oban, approx. 10.5" x 15.5"
Condition: Fine, never framed, no flaws, uncirculated print
Impression: Fine; made from the original blocks
Fine, this print is crisp and has very strong color
Notes: A fine landscape by Shiro Kasamatsu showing a blossoming cherry tree near a rural mountain home at night. Laborers are seen at the lower left carrying building supplies. Often times in rural mountain areas only mules and humans are able to carry supplies into remote villages accessible by only steep and rocky mountain paths. Presumably the "stream" of the title would be found in the extreme foreground just outside the border of the print, but one has to pause to wonder how this print got its title.

In the late 1950s Kasamatsu, while working with the publisher Unsodo, made a suite of four landscape prints that were predominantly black and white with subtle use of other colors. Two are winter scenes: Sunset at Minakami, Gunma, Joshu (1958) along with Sea of Echigo (1957); and two are spring scenes: Plum Trees at Yoshino (1958) and this print.
