Kyosai rakuga (Kyosai's Drawings for Pleasure) is comprised of two volumes that were published in Tokyo in Meiji 14 (1881) by Takeda Den'emon and Morita Tetsugoro. It includes thirty-three color illustrations of animals and flowers.

Kyosai was born in Shimose Province, and was the son of a samurai. At the age of six Kyosai began his art studies under the renowned ukiyo-e master, Kuniyoshi, later studied painting in the Kano school, and at the age of 27 became an independent artist working in the Hongo area of Tokyo.

Kawanabe Kyosai was an eccentric artist who was well known for his exaggerated lifestyle, and there are many tales of his adventures in the consumption of sake. With his fellow Meiji era artists Kunichika and Kobayashi Kiyochika, Kyosai often went on drinking binges.

Kyosai's painting was exhibited at the Vienna International Exposition in 1873 and at the Exposition of Paris in 1883 making him one of the earliest Japanese artists to exhibit in Europe. His woodblock prints are rare.
