About Sadao Watanabe

Sadao Watanabe (1913-1996) specialized in the art of katazome ("stencil printing") which he studied under Keisuke Serizawa a leading folk art print master, who had made the innovation of stenciling onto paper rather than in the traditional Okinawan method of stenciling on cloth. Sadao developed his work around the themes of bible stories and in 1943 exhibited his first biblical print, entitled "The Story of Abraham." By 1985 Sadao had completed 380 Biblically themed prints.
