Notes: A very rare and highly regarded design

Kokyo is reported to have made the drawing for this print in 1902, after seeing the famous geisha Mitsumoto Osada of Kyoto's Gion district perform her interpretation of the popular kabuki dance of the heron maiden, wherein the spirit of a heron changes into a beautiful woman.

ABOUT TANIGUCHI KOKYO
Born in Osaka in 1864. Real name Tsuchinosuke. He entered the school of Kono Bairei in 1884 and studied nihonga with him. He became a teacher of the Kyoto School of Art in 1894 and also at the Kyoto Municipal School of Painting from 1909 to 1912. He won the third prize at the fourth Interior Industrial Exposition of 1895, the Copper Cup at the International EXPO of 1900 in Paris, and the third prize in the first Bunten in 1907. He was known as the first artist of historical painting in Kansai and was well acquainted with traditional practices.
